Geraldton’s historic Hermitage building bought back off State Government and will be a tourism Airbnb asset

The charming and historic Hermitage building — designed by renowned architect and priest Monsignor John Hawes — will soon be transformed into one of Geraldton’s most unique Airbnb experiences. Guests will be able to soak up the history of the mid-19th century arts and crafts movement after the Diocese of Geraldton raised the funds needed to buy back the heritage-listed building back off the State Government. The two-storey building was fenced off for some time, but now, thanks to the Hawes Heritage Appeal, it will be given a new lease on life. The income generated by Airbnb customers will help conserve the building, built in the mid-1930s. The Government gave the Monsignor Hawes Heritage Centre a management order which allows the foundation to use the building, but restricts it from generating a profit. Father Robert Cross said using the Hermitage as an Airbnb would benefit the community by offering guests an opportunity to experience Monsignor Hawes’ history. “This place is a domestic setting, and most of Hawes’ buildings are churches, so it just gives you another experience of Hawes and his architecture and also the man himself,” Father Cross said. “When you’re in this place you can almost feel his presence — if you knew a little about the man — his quirkiness and his arts and crafts.” Monsignor Hawes designed the building, opposite St John of God Hospital Geraldton, as his possible retirement home, although that never eventuated. The cottage features roof timber beams, a large stone fire place, stained glass windows, parquet floor and a Latin inscription on the ceiling that translated reads: “Forgive me that I may be refreshed before I depart and will be no more.” However there is no kitchen, as it was designed as a hospital chaplain’s residence who would have had their meals across the road at the SJOG convent. Father Cross said the income from using the site as an Airbnb could be used towards operating costs, conservation and maintenance rather than the current situation leaving the foundation out of pocket. “I spoke to the Government two weeks ago and they said they were sorting the paperwork,” he said. The foundation raised the $100,000 needed through fundraising events and a car raffle, which will be drawn on May 1. Hawes Heritage tours co-ordinator Gerry Eastman said the May Day Fete at the Catholic Centre on May 1 would include car boot sales, market stalls, an art exhibition, pole dancing and most importantly the draw of the winner of the $30,000 Toyota Corolla Ascent. “Using this building will create a lot more interest by being open to people. We’ve had it all locked away for so long,” Mrs Eastman said. “We are still looking for people to join the car boot sale, and stallholders.” There are a total of 1000 tickets selling for $100 for the Toyota Corolla Ascent.
