Geraldton’s International Yoga Day at QEII Centre celebrated with Indian sweets and community lessons

The teachings of yoga, meditation, pranayama, music and dance were shared on International Yoga Day by some of the city’s best community teachers last Saturday. The Geraldton Yoga Club, in collaboration with The Midwest Indian Cultural Society, met at the Queen Elizabeth II Centre on June 18. The room was filled with dedicated teachers, students, collaborators, volunteers, and sponsors eager for a day of meditation and enlightenment. The Geraldton Yoga Club had more than 100 people show up on their yoga mats to move in a celebration of union, connection and harmony for International Yoga Day. Kheer — an Indian sweet prepared by the Sah family — was available to taste, while sponsors including MidWest Orthopedics, Indian Consulate of Perth, Sri Sri School of Yoga, Art of Living Foundation and City of Greater Geraldton attended the event. “Thank you to all our dedicated yoga teachers and the wonderful guest teachers Zeelnaz Parabia, Prashant Jaiswal, and Ajay Potturi for the teachings, energy, and love,” she said. “Ajay for the beautiful meditation and for the ‘AnnaDhanam’ — the sacred tradition of the yoga of offering food for the community — which has been donated by Hari Kumar, Soumya, and her family.” Yoga was developed more than 5000 years ago in Northern India, the word mentioned in Rig Veda — some of the world’s oldest texts.
