Geraldton tennis player Joshua Carter has won the men’s open singles at the 2022 CBH Group Country Tennis Championships.

More than 100 tennis players travelled from regional WA to hit the courts at Alexander Park Tennis Club this month for the event.

Carter said he was pretty confident ahead of the tournament that he would have a deep run.

“Yeah, it was a good tournament; I was playing pretty good tennis,” he said.

“There were a few close matches, which made it interesting, but I just played the big points well and at the end of the day that’s probably the reason why I won.”

As for what’s next, Carter said he just loved playing the sport and enjoyed having a hit with his mates.

“I’m currently playing pennants in Perth at the moment. Whatever tournaments come up really I’m just playing,” he said.

While tennis isn’t one of the biggest sports in Geraldton, Carter said his brother got him into it.

“He started off playing and then I slowly followed behind him,” he said.

Tennis West CEO Brett Patten said there was a fantastic display of tennis across the three-day championships.

“It was wonderful to watch the matches over the weekend and the talent that is coming out of our regions is simply exceptional, and I look forward to seeing the younger players develop in their tennis journeys,” he said.
