The City of Greater Geraldton has opened the new resource recovery station at the Meru Waste Management Facility, now offering up to 20 bays for general waste, as well as separate bays for recyclable waste. Rather than driving to different locations around the tip, residents can dispose of their waste conveniently at one location. The station opened on Wednesday, with residents and small commercial vehicles now able to recycle unwanted materials at designated recycling bays. The $7.36 million project was joint funded with the Federal Government contributing $1.13m and the council the remaining $6.23 m. On entering, tip users can park up and place household hazardous waste, oils and chemicals, empty gas bottles and batteries, e-waste, white goods, scrap metal, wood, mattresses and bulky items into the designated bins. They can drive on to recycling points for green waste, plastic, cardboard, and general waste bays, located at a 20-bay station. The one-stop shop will allow the council to safely and economically recover, re-purpose and recycle waste in the community. Mayor Jerry Clune thanked the Federal Government for helping fund the new facility, which is designed to meet the community’s growing needs. Separation will be the key to the new resource recovery station working. “Meru, or the tip, is visited nearly 9000 times every month and the new 20-bay, fit-for-purpose facility has been built to accommodate this steadily increasing number,” he said. “I’d like to thank the Australian Government for providing $1.13 million to build the new facility which enables these valuable resources, which used to be considered waste, to be conveniently and safely dropped off at one central location. “The increase in recovered resources not only reduces waste being sent to landfill, which moves us towards a more circular economy, it will also generate economic returns for the City. “This will be a test to see how disciplined our community is with putting things in the right spot.” More information on how to make a trip to the facility fast and simple is available here.
