Geraldton’s metro soccer team closed out their season with a heard-earned win last Saturday.

Ugle Fabrications La Fiamma beat Perth AFC, 2-0, as Tom Mitic and Kris Gough got on the scoresheet. It was Gough’s last game for the Perth squad.

Coach Keegan Roos said the scoreline was welcome at the end of a tough season where goals had been hard to come by.

“All round the senior squad, we have improved a lot this season and have stepped up playing pretty football,” he said.

“I am happy with the progress we made this season after losing experienced and influential players. “We dominated most of the game this weekend but to put the cherry on top, we finally scored the goals.

“A great way to end this season, we are now at the standard to build quickly and start on tactical work for next season.

“I am proud of the boys for not giving up on getting the style of play I was craving and that is good, pretty football.” Roos praised Richard Gilsenan for coming in from the club’s Geraldton squad to play alone up front for the metro side and said Karim Alic Momand, who stepped up from the metro reserves, had showed dedication and improvement.

A shift in position from out wide had also helped Lachlan Gray find form, he said.

Roos said that had helped in the absence of senior players such as Matt Cable and Joey Italiano, who was recovering from a season-ending injury that needed surgery.

UF La Fiamma president Mark Gray said the side were in a transitional phase and hoping to bring young players through to support the existing squad.
