The top two sides are in action in the Great Northern Women’s Football League today against strong teams, with league leaders Chapman Valley playing fourth-placed Towns, and Northampton up against fifth-placed Railways.

While there is a gap to the top of the table, both the Bulldogs and Blues will want to firm up their chances of a top-four finish.

Valley did just enough to hang on to top spot last Saturday with a nine-goal win over Railways, 11.10 (76) to 2.0 (12).

Valley president Grant Woodhams said his club was focused on the flag, and praised the competitiveness of the league as the fourth finals series in its history approaches.

“There’s a really high skill level there,” Woodhams, a former GNFL president, said.

“I think the competition’s growing.

“It’s exceeded expectations and proven to all the clubs to have been a real boost.”

At Purcher International Oval, a plucky Saints women’s side that had kicked seven goals a week earlier went scoreless as Northampton overran them, 10.6 (66) to 0.

With the Rams and Valley each on 40 points and just a few percent between them, a 12-point gap to Brigades in third means the top two look set.

But Towns or Railways could make the top four.

Brigades beat Towns in last Saturday’s other game, 7.8 (50) to 1.1 (7).

They play Rovers tomorrow, with the Demons looking to find some consistency.

Mullewa have a bye.
