The women’s section at Greenough Regional Prison is undergoing refurbishments and new work worth $12.5 million, Corrective Services commissioner Tony Hassall said in Geraldton today.

He said he had just signed a tender for a new fence separating the women’s section from nearby male sections, which would also have a separate entrance.

The Prison Officer’s Union criticised the existing chain link fence between the two sections that made women prisoners highly visible to their male counterparts in the next unit.

Some of these male prisoners entered the female section during the 2018 Greenough Prison riots.
