Health tick needed for mayor’s bout

A State health and safety overseer has to “tick-off” on whether Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn can face a man dubbed “Death Row” in a boxing match. Geraldton-reared Troy Humberston has signed up to put the gloves on against Van Styn in Fists of Fury II on April 10. But Humberston, aka Death Row, has a big record, including being a heavyweight star and national and Oceania Greco-Roman wrestling champion. Van Styn has not fought in the ring — and the Combat Sports Commission of WA is examining if it’s safe for him to hop in. The commission registers combat sports participants, enforces health and safety guidelines, and issues permits for contests and fines for breaches of the law. “We just hope it gets the OK, because this fight will be winner, it will be a war,” boxing coach and promoter Paul Barrett said. Like Van Styn, Humberston worked in security. “We used to talk on jobs but I haven’t seen him in years,” Humbertson said. “I’m pretty sure we’ll get the green light. It’s an exhibition match for charity — there will be extra padded equipment and I will look after him.”
