Hope Springs Therapeutic Community resident opens up about recovery journey and rehabilitation stigma

A woodwork instructor and resident at Hope Springs Therapeutic Community have joined forces to build a table from a 130-year-old wool press, while trying to eliminate the stigma of those in rehabilitation. Almost six months ago, Eric, who does not want his surname published, made the decision to embark on his recovery journey at Hope Springs Therapeutic Community and opened up about his recovery and the stigma. When COVID-19 hit Australia, the 45-year-old was locked down in Tasmania and Melbourne and lost eight jobs. He’s a hospitality professional from Melbourne. But despite everything looking good on the outside he was abusing substances for more than 20 years and hit rock bottom at Rottnest Island. He also got caught up in the Brisbane floods in 2022 and said he lost everything he had. Luckily, his profession more often than not provided accommodation, so he didn’t suffer homelessness like many others did. “Sometimes you just need a little bit of a helping hand, so those sorts of things led me to here,” Eric said. A unique project to build a table out of the 130-year-old Humble & Sons Ferrier wool press for a farm owner in the Mid West and Gascoyne kept Eric busy for six months. Residents collect Acacia wood from the farming property which they build free-form furniture with. One day, a woman from that nearby farm approached Hope Springs woodworking instructor, Max Royce, and asked if he would build her a table out of her grandfather’s wool press. Mr Royce wanted to give something back and took on the project with Eric. After completing the build over six months, Mr Royce estimated the table was worth about $8000. “When cyclone Seroja came through, their shed blew down and this was in it. They salvaged all the timbers, put it in a big pile and it just got left there. We came along and we worked out this deal,” Mr Royce said. “She hasn’t seen it yet, she’s going to be very excited.” In its day, the Ferrier wool press was one of the most innovative wool presses available in Australia and by 1907, about 1500 numbered Ferriers had been purchased throughout the nation. Mr Royce said it’s been a great journey watching the progress and it was great to see the table come to fruition. “It’s very rewarding, because you see the changes in people from when they first come in to when they leave,” he said. “The reward you get from seeing people grow and go back into the community as better people, that’s a great thing.” Eric said building the table was a simple task that was rewarding for both himself and Hope Springs, and although it might not be for everyone, stigmas surrounding rehabilitation need to be quashed. “You see people from all walks of life, it’s not just what you might classify as the typical people that sort of need help, it can affect everyone,” he said. “It’s good that there’s support networks and stuff like that to help and encourage in there. “I was a professional in my field, I played sport at a high level, but I needed help and I got the help . . . practice the principle of looking for the similarities not the differences, because that’s where the stigma can lie. It’s a problem that anyone can come across.”
