IGA expansion gets council approval

City of Greater Geraldton councillors have unanimously agreed to amend the Local Planning Scheme, allowing a supermarket on Fifth Street to progress their expansion.

The amendment to Lot 380, 240 Fifth Street, Wonthella, changes the zoning from Residential R60 to Commercial.

The lot, which contains a house and two outbuildings, is next to Lot 6, home to Wonthella Supa IGA.

According to briefing notes, the proponent — Hille, Thompson & Delfos Surveyors and Planners, on behalf of Dunmarra Pty Ltd — intend to demolish the house and one of the outbuildings and build a new commercial premises, with one area designated for a pharmacy.

During the council meeting on Tuesday night, Cr Graeme Bylund said the proposed expansion would benefit the community.

“It’s a lovely little hub there, it really hums,” he said.

“It’s a very well-used area and we need that in our suburbs.”

The City will now seek approval from Planning Minister Rita Saffioti.

Councillors also unanimously agreed to support the development of a national park on the Houtman Abrolhos Islands.

According to briefing notes, development of the islands has been considered a “game- changer project” for tourism in the Mid West.

As part of the motion, the City has requested to be considered in future management discussions, including having a seat at the State Government’s Interagency Committee table.

In the meantime councillors have approved the formation of an Abrolhos Islands Tourism Development Committee.

Chief executive Ross McKim, Cr Bylund and councillors Victor Tanti, Natasha Colliver, David Caudwell have been appointed to the committee.

The new promenade running along the recently completed Beresford Foreshore will be named Jambinbirri Walk.

The suggestion was tabled by Mayor Shane Van Styn, who said the name was an opportunity to increase awareness of the Wilunyu language and recognise Geraldton’s history.

In the 2019-20 budget, council will consider allocating funding to commission artwork to recognise the name.

Ruah Community Services will be exempt from paying rates on its property in Mahomets Flats after councillors agreed the property is used exclusively for a charitable purpose.

The four units at 5 Hadda Way are used as respite accommodation for people with severe and persistent mental health issues.
