Jacob Lathwell takes out junior sedan classic as youngsters take centre stage in Geraldton speedway

The juniors took centre stage at the Geraldton City Speedway on kids’ night on Saturday as the next generation of talent showed their stuff. The junior sedan classic headlined the event with Jacob Lathwell claiming top honours after the 14-lap feature race. Lathwell had started on the front row and immediately passed pole sitter Samuel Tate on the opening laps and never looked back, leading every lap to win by more than five seconds. In the production sedans, Hayden Thomas dominated the night taking two-second places and a first in the opening heats to qualify second for the feature. After overcoming a rev issue in the opening lap he swiftly passed Dean Davidson on lap two and came home more than 10 seconds in front with Grant Gee taking third. They were also the only three racers to finish the event as four racers didn’t even make the start line while David Herbert and Cade Munro both retired because of mechanical issues. The junior F125s followed a similar pattern as Jaeger Berry took another title though for once it was not an all-Berry podium after Charlee Harris came home in second place ahead of James Berry. Julialle Beard took out the senior F125s after Allan Beard was disqualified after crossing the line first with Taylor and Peter Harris taking second and third, respectively. In the junior top stars sedans, Archie Root took home a hard-fought victory over Ella Ricetti after Zak Turner retired from the lead. The two traded lap times through the race but Root had built up enough of a gap in the early stages to hold on to win by 1.7 seconds. The main break also hosted the bike race with patrons able to do their own hot laps of the track on their own peddle power. Racing will not return to the speedway until April when the club will host the Mid West Championships on April 8-9.
