Jurien Bay skydiving stunt: Teen Sam Sieracki claims world record for solving Rubik’s cube while in freefall

Merging two hobbies into one has seen a WA teenager enter the Guinness Book of World Records — for the fastest time solving a Rubik’s cube while in skydiving freefall above Jurien Bay. Sam Sieracki, 17, recently became the world-record title holder for solving the rotating puzzle cube while skydiving in 28.25 seconds. It took him five attempts, but that time beat the previous world record of 30.14sec. On land, Sam’s best time at solving a Rubik’s cube is 6.5sec., but his skydiving world-record attempt had been about a year in the making for the passionate speed cuber. He told 7 Regional News this week: “200km/h winds rushing in your face trying to blow the cube out of your hands makes it significantly harder.” Sam also had to ensure he had a proper grasp of the cube, as it could be a hazard if it slipped out of his hands while in freefall. The Perth teenager has been passionate about speed cubing for several years and started competing in 2017. He did his first tandem skydive at age 13 and obtained his solo licence not long after turning 16. He has already racked up 80 jumps. The idea was to combine two passions into one, and Sam said he was thrilled it all came together — like a puzzle.
