A successful pennants season has wrapped up in local badminton, with one star player getting a near-perfect record on the court and a golden winner in the top division.

The Geraldton Badminton Association’s Michelle McDonald said local shuttlers were now looking forward to the final pennants round of the year and welcoming new players after a great season ended with the grand finals on Tuesday.

“The season was fantastic,” McDonald said.

“We would love to welcome new and old players to the last (competition) of this year and also for our upcoming season of pennants next year.”

The Gold team won the A-grade grand finals, beating Black 21 games to six games.

Kyria Lumley was the stand-out for the Golds and also the best player of the competition.

She played every round of the 14-week season and dropped just one game, winning 54 of 55.

Ugyen Namgyel was the best player for Black, with three games.

Blue beat Red in the B-grade grand final, 12 games to three games.

There was a strong turnout for the season, with 54 players in A grade and 38 in B grade and all of the teams full.

The next round is a shorter season, starting in October in the first week of the school term and finishes before Christmas.

High school-aged players are welcome.

Junior players also won several honours at the Badminton WA Perth Championships last month.

Melody Kelly won the under-15 girls’ singles ahead of Rhiarna Ugle, while Serena Koruthu and Angela Chen won the under-15 girls’ doubles.

Rhiarna Ugle was also champion in another division, winning the under-15 mixed doubles with Jordan McDonald.

Sam Koruthu, Sui Loy, Lachlan McDonald and Reef Loy won most improved and encouragement awards.
