La Fiamma holding on to promotion aspirations despite loss to Bayswater City
Ugle Fabrications La Fiamma still has hopes of promotion despite a loss to top-of-the-table Bayswater City over the weekend.
Coming up against the top side was a challenge for the Geraldton side that was made even tougher when a red card forced the side to be a man down for most of the clash.
Despite being outnumbered, La Fiamma fought valiantly, going down 2-1.
Captain Lachlan Gray said they knew the magnitude of the game and he was proud of how the players responded.
“We knew it was going to be a tough fixture; it was a hard game when we played them away and drew 1-1,” he said.
“We were really unfortunate not to have drawn that game, especially given we played with 10 men for 65 minutes.
“I couldn’t have asked for more of an effort from the guys; everyone dug deep and played with as much heart as possible.”
Gray said despite the loss, there would be a lot of confidence taken from the game.
“It’s huge for growth in our players,” he said.
“I think we’ve got a great side and we’ve got more good players coming through the youth system in Geraldton.
“I think our team is going to continue to go from strength to strength.”
Gray said goalkeeper Braiden Page continued to show his importance to the side, while Mathijs Travasso stepped up when his side was down a player.
The result means the side will have to rely on Bayswater losing in order to be a chance to win the league, but promotion is still on the cards.
With La Fiamma sitting in fourth, this week’s clash with fifth-placed Swan Valley looms as an important one, according to Gray.
“We had a good result against them winning 8-3 at their home, but we may have woken up a beast,” he said.
“Since that game, they’ve gone through and pretty much whitewashed everyone.
“We have just as much respect for them as Bayswater, and we know it’s going to be a very tough game.”
La Fiamma takes on Swan Valley at Salvatore Sciuto Stadium on Saturday, July 20, with kick-off at 6pm.
