Lester Prize exhibition: Geraldton Regional Art Gallery to host prestigious art prize showcase
Geraldton art lovers will have the chance to appreciate works by the nation’s leading portrait artists next month.
One of Australia’s most prestigious art prizes, the Lester Prize, is on its way to exhibit at the Geraldton Regional Art Gallery.
The 2020 competition had more than 750 entries, whittled down to 40 as shortlisted finalists.
Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said it was an honour to host the 2020 Lester Prize. “This is Australia’s most recognised art prize with over $80,000 in prize money and we are hosting it at GRAG for the next five weeks for all the Mid West to see,” he said.
“A majority of the finalists are from Western Australia, which may be inspiring and heartening for our creative community.
“I strongly encourage those interested in attending opening night to RSVP as soon as possible.
“This premiere exhibition opening is sure to sell out.”
The Lester Prize will be on display at GRAG from Saturday, July 3-Friday, August 6. To secure a ticket to the opening night on Friday, July 2, RSVP at eventbrite.com.au.
The next day, figurative artist Jill Ansell will host a portrait art workshop. Tickets are $30 and the class runs from 12.45pm-3.30pm at GRAG for adults and children over 16. Tickets at eventbrite.com.au.
