Geraldton race lovers are getting their final fix of horses, fun and fashion as the Geraldton Turf Club’s 2021-22 season winds down. On Easter Saturday, the Geraldton Turf Club hosted the Dongara Cup. In fine conditions, the crowd witnessed local horse A Steamy Affair claim the main prize of the day. Trainer Rhona MacPhilomey said the race was well run and jockey Peta Edwards “rode her a treat”. “Everything went our way, she was worthy and entitled to the win,” she said. Owner Leslie Allan said they were not super confident of a win, but the horse “tries so hard, gives it her all and has a big heart.” It was a welcome win after Perth raider, Sugar Cain, spoiled the party for the local contenders the week before when it won the Geraldton Gold Cup. While crowd numbers have been slightly down due to lingering COVID restrictions, the atmosphere on race days at the turf club has still been lively and entertaining. Geraldton Turf Club hosted the 2022 AFGRI Mingenew Cup on Thursday, before its final race of the season on Friday, April 29.
