A Geraldton-based organisation which provides entertainment and a sense of community year-round has received a boost.

Presented by Geraldton MLA Lara Dalton, a $20,000 Lotterywest grant is set to assist the Mid West Multicultural Association in continuing to help migrants settle into Geraldton and the Mid West, enriching the community and celebrating cultural diversity.

MWMA president Tom Mwangi said the financial support was a major boost for the organisation’s popular Festival of Lights.

“The grant will be used for Festival of Lights infrastructure and will be utilised for paying for various activities for the enjoyment of all ages,” he said.

“This will also include kite making workshops at a few local schools to be showcased at the Festival of Lights, just to mention a few.

“Lotterywest has been a major sponsor over the years to which we are very thankful.”

Ms Dalton said the city’s population had always boasted a strong multicultural component and the work of volunteer groups like the Mid West Multicultural Association played a massive role in helping new arrivals and sharing cultures from around the world.

“I am proud that my electorate of Geraldton has a strong multicultural community and that they are so active in our city,” she said.
