A man has been charged with assault after a meth-fuelled road rage incident and crash in which both drivers tested positive for the drug.

Two police vehicles travelling on Brand Highway around 4.30pm on Tuesday stopped when a man was seen punching another driver near the traffic lights at Ackland Road in Mt Tarcoola.

A vehicle had crashed into the back of another at the lights. One of the drivers has been charged with assault as a result of the alleged attack.

Police say drug tests performed at the scene and at the Geraldton station found both drivers were under the influence of methamphetamine.

The footage from the body cameras of the officers who stopped at the scene is being reviewed.
