Marcia Vicky Ashwin fined $4000 for drink-driving which led to accident with Geraldton pedestrian

A woman who rammed her car into a man on a Geraldton street after a domestic dispute has been fined $4000 for being intoxicated at the time of the incident. Marcia Vicky Ashwin, 45, had been driving in Spalding on November 28, 2021, to try find her partner after he walked off from an argument. She saw a man who she thought was her partner and drove directly toward him, striking him with the car. The identity of the victim was not revealed in court. Ashwin also crashed into a brick wall and was later found to be driving without a licence and while under the influence of alcohol. She pleaded guilty to unlawfully doing grievous bodily harm to the victim, with the extent of the man’s injuries expected to be revealed when Ashwin is sentenced in the District Court in August. Ashwin also pleaded guilty to damaging the brick wall, driving without authority and while under the influence of alcohol. Defence counsel Georgia Keysers told Geraldton Magistrates Court on Thursday Ashwin was in the final stages of kidney failure and had led a “hard life”, but had managed to stay out of trouble for some time. Magistrate Angus Hockton noted this was not Ashwin’s first drink-driving charge and the need for “personal deterrence” was high. He fined Ashwin $4000 for driving while under the influence of alcohol and a further $500 for driving without a licence. She was also fined $1500 for the damage to the wall.
