Long-term bachelor and Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn became engaged last weekend to FIFO worker and Geraldton local Tammy Croasdale.

They were both single when they met last year at her 40th birthday party, where she wore a wedding dress as a joke.

“She had it as a fake wedding because she had never been married and figured she never would be,” Mr Van Styn said with a grin.

“I tried to approach her and she thought I was a bit creepy, so she avoided me. I saw her once again at the nightclub and she avoided me, but third time lucky.”

The “third time”, Ms Croasdale accepted an invitation to Mr Van Styn’s masonic lodge Christmas party.

“She thought that was quite unique,” he said.

“We’ve been together ever since; the only days we spend apart is when she goes to work.”

Mr Van Styn said they were yet to set a date for the wedding.

“We were thinking April next year but it might be in the second half...We have got to wait and see what COVID does, there might be a fair turnout,” he said.

Ms Croasdale was at work in the Pilbara and unavailable for comment.
