Melbourne Comedy Festival’s Deadly Funny competition coming to Geraldton’s QPT to find new Indigenous talent

A free night of entertainment is set to have a Geraldton audience in howls of laughter, with aspiring Indigenous comedians given the chance to launch their careers in performances set to be “deadly funny”. The Melbourne Comedy Festival — Deadly Funny is Australia’s biggest First Nations comedy competition and is coming to the Queens Park Theatre next month. It’s mission is to unearth Australia’s freshest and funniest Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander talents. City of Greater Geraldton mayor Jerry Clune is thrilled to support this rib-tickling event, which comes as Geraldton’s prepares for the region’s own festival of Aboriginal arts and culture — Iwarra Wilungga — in April. “Deadly Funny will not only be a great night out at QPT it will also provide a fantastic platform for our budding Aboriginal comedians to kickstart their careers in showbiz,” he said. “Alongside the opportunity to get on stage and try material in front of a live audience, participants will also have the chance to sit with seasoned comedian Kevin Kropinyeri during a special two-hour workshop to help refine their acts. “Additionally, the winner of the Geraldton event qualifies to compete for a cash prize of $1000 during the State final in Perth and the chance to win a trip to the Melbourne International Comedy Festival for the Deadly Funny National Grand Final.” Deadly Funny is on at the QPT on Thursday, February 8. “We are confident this event will unearth a swag of new comics, perhaps even someone who can be added to the Iwarra Wilungga program for later in the year,” Mr Clune said.
