Michael Dennis Kenneth Jean Dann: Man with violent history accused of repeatedly hitting woman with hammer

A man accused of hitting a woman with a hammer four times and throwing a coffee table at her, and who has multiple convictions for assaulting her in the past, was refused bail last week. Michael Dennis Kenneth Jean Dann, 27, appeared in Geraldton Magistrates Court from Greenough Regional Prison on Thursday May 23 for a bail application. He is yet to enter pleas to two counts of aggravated unlawful assault causing bodily harm and criminal damage. Police prosecutor Sen. Const. Thomas Potts said the alleged victim had been living in Perth after concerns of ongoing physical and mental abuse. The court was told on April 21 at an address in Karloo, Mr Dann accused the woman of cheating on him, and struck her on the arm. When the woman denied cheating, Mr Dann is accused of lifting a coffee table into the air and facing her, demanding that she tell him what she had done, and throwing the table at her. Sen. Const. Potts said Mr Dann swung a hammer at the woman four times, hitting her across the head and body, causing bleeding and bruising. Magistrate Matthew Walton said the accused was convicted of assaults involving the same complainant back in 2016 and 2019, and history was “critical” in determining bail. He said there was a “thread of behaviour that has been established”. “These are allegations only . . . but these are two allegations of unequivocal domestic violence,” he said, denying Mr Dann bail.
