Mid West MPs encourage public to provide input on abortion reform, remain tight-lipped on how they will vote

Mid West politicians from both sides of the aisle are encouraging the public to provide input as the WA Government seeks to reform the State’s abortion laws, while for the most part remaining tight-lipped on how they plan to vote. The McGowan Government announced on November 20 it planned to decriminalise abortion, and has opened a four-week consultation period for women, providers and other stakeholders to provide input. MPs are set to get a conscience vote on the proposed reforms, which would make it easier, simpler and safer for women in WA to have an abortion. Agricultural Region Labor MLC Darren West was the sole Mid West representative to confirm he would be supporting the abortion reform legislation, while most said they would wait until consultation was complete and a Bill was brought to Parliament before making a decision. His fellow Labor representatives Lara Dalton, Sandra Carr and Shelley Payne encouraged women, people who have had abortions and reproductive healthcare providers to provide feedback. National MLC Colin DeGrussa said he would wait until legislation was presented to Parliament, but stated he did believe reforms should be made. “I do believe that abortion is a health issue and consequently should not be considered in the criminal code. In that sense WA needs to fall in line with other jurisdictions,” he said. “I would also urge the Labor Government to ensure that when consulting on the proposal, and when drafting legislation, it properly considers the needs of regional people and communities.” His fellow National MLC Martin Aldridge said he welcomed a review into WA’s abortion laws, but questioned the length of the period, suggesting more time could capture a more accurate reflection of public opinion. “I will await the outcome of the consultation being undertaken and look forward to hearing the views of constituents and stakeholders once a Bill is presented to Parliament,” he said. Moore representative Shane Love said he would wait until legislation is drafted before making a decision, but welcomed constituents to discuss their views with him. Liberal MLC Steve Martin agreed that consultation was welcome. North West Central MLA Merome Beard was also contacted for comment. The consultation period closes on December 17. The government said it was seeking feedback on the current need for GP referral, mandatory counselling, the gestational limit for abortion, and the role of a ministerial panel to approve later-term abortions.
