Mid West round 19 AFL wrap: O’Meara and Fremantle secure narrowest of wins against Collingwood at the MCG

Fremantle managed the seemingly impossible on Sunday, defeating ladder leaders Collingwood by a point at the MCG. Dongara product Jaeger O’Meara impressed for the Dockers with 23 disposals, four clearances and a crucial goal in the last quarter as Fremantle staged an incredible comeback. After trailing at the start of every quarter, Fremantle stood tall against a rampant Collingwood midfield and made the most of their opportunities in front of goal. Shai Bolton kicked a behind to secure the win. The final score was Fremantle 12.7 (79) to Collingwood 11.12 (78). Northampton’s Brynn Teakle made his AFL return after a long stint in the VFL in North Melbourne’s clash against the Sydney Swans on Saturday at the SCG. The Mid West local kicked one goal and had 17 disposals but was outclassed in the ruck battle against Brodie Grundy, who had a mammoth 62 hitouts to Teakle’s five. The Swans were simply too good for the Roos, with the final score Sydney 12.12 (84) to North Melbourne 7.11 (53). Fellow Northampton product Patrick Cripps and his Carlton team enjoyed an eight-point win over Melbourne at the MCG on Saturday night. Cripps was the top-rated player for the Blues with 29 disposals, 17 kicks and eight clearances. Geraldton’s Judd McVee had 15 disposals, eight kicks and five marks for the Dees. After finding themselves down by 10 points going into the final term, the Demons clawed their way back into the contest with a three-goal quarter but the Blues were able to hold on and deliver a long-awaited win, 12.6 (78) to 10.10 (70). West Coast missed the mark on Saturday night with a loss at the hands of Richmond at Optus Stadium. After a fairly competitive first half, the Eagles lost their way in the third term as the Tigers piled on eight goals to the Eagles’ one. Jamie Cripps finished with 15 disposals, nine marks and one goal and was the top-rated Mid West player in the contest. Liam Ryan managed two goals — including a contender for goal of the year — along with nine disposals, while Tyler Brockman finished with 12 disposals, three marks and two clearances. Richmond’s rampant third quarter led them to a 49-point victory over the Eagles, 16.9 (105) to 8.8 (56). Geraldton’s Jack Martin and Geelong secured a 31-point win at home against St Kilda at GMHBA Stadium. Martin impressed with two goals, 11 disposals, seven marks and six tackles. Geelong set the tone with a six-goal opening term before running away with it. The Saints continued to push throughout the afternoon but failed to get close enough to worry the Cats. The final score was Geelong 17.11 (113) to Saints 12.10 (82).
