Mid West Schools’ Performing Arts Festival showcase puts exciting Geraldton talent at centre stage

The annual Mid West Schools’ Performing Arts Festival showcased the exciting talent here in Geraldton as students danced, sang and performed their hearts out.
Held at the Queens Park Theatre on Friday, October 28, the showcase featured performances from schools including Allendale Primary School, Holland Street School, St John’s School, Rangeway Primary School, Waggrakine Primary School, Champion Bay Senior High School, and Geraldton Senior High School.
Showcase, as it is affectionately known, began in 2001, and is held annually to give students the opportunity to engage in the performing arts.
Since its beginning, students and staff across the Mid West have worked together to act, dance, sing, play and perform in the show.
Students also work behind the scenes, backstage, in dressing rooms, administration and media production to assist and gain valuable experience in these fields.
School groups performed in a morning matinee for school audiences, then returned for a public performance in the evening.
This year’s show had students singing, playing ukulele, choral speaking, playing the didgeridoo, dancing and performing circus skills. The ever-popular Rangeway Rockets Skipping Squad showed off their skills and fitness to close the show.
For the first time, the performances were judged by independent adjudicators, with schools awarded runner-up and winner cash prizes for front-of-curtain performances and main stage acts.
The prizes for front-of-curtain acts went to runner-up St John’s School and winner Allendale Primary School.
In the main stage acts, Geraldton Senior High School finished runner-up, while Rangeway Primary School took home the award.
A special encouragement award was given to Holland Street School’s Glee Club Performers.
