The family of a 13-year-old Geraldton boy who lost his life after a horrific house fire last month are holding a candlelight vigil this weekend. Nulla Mongoo died in Perth Children’s Hospital on June 5, four days after he suffered burns to 90 per cent of his body when a fire broke out in his Mt Tarcoola home on Marinula Road. His older brother Matthew, 14, and a 12-year-old friend suffered critical burns and were airlifted to Perth. It was only this week revealed by the Child and Adolescent Health Service that both boys were now in stable conditions and have been moved out of intensive care to a ward. It is understood, however, they will require follow-up treatment and that their rehabilitation could continue for years. The Mongoo family is organising a candlelight vigil to honour Nulla this Saturday. “Please come together with Nulla’s family and friends to commemorate Nulla, a cheerful, cheeky and compassionate soul who will be missed by many,” the invitation said. “We will be holding a candlelight vigil for those in the community who would like to attend.” The vigil will be held at Stow Gardens on Saturday, July 8 from 4-7pm. Nulla and Matt’s mother Melissa Mongoo posted to Facebook saying the vigil was strictly a drug- and alcohol-free event and no violence would be tolerated. “This is a family event to also help raise money for my baby’s funeral cost,” she wrote. It is understood that arson squad officers are still investigating the house fire on behalf of the coroner.
