Mooniemia Magic walks 35km in Geraldton, raising $85K+ for Walk for Women’s Cancer in honour of late friend

A group of Mid West marchers are working and walking together to raise funds for the Perkins New Town Toyota Walk for Women’s Cancer 2025 in honour of their late friend. Founded in 2021 by Roslyn Hoult — who was diagnosed with cancer in late 2020 — Mooniemia Magic, named after the Aboriginal name for Northampton, was inspired by Ms Hoult’s deep connection to her hometown and her love for the community. It was also created to make a difference by funding vital cancer research, focused on finding a cure and developing kinder treatments. Devastatingly, Ms Hoult died in March 2022 after a brave two-year fight. Her legacy continues on through her husband Richard, and their two children Danica and Byron, together with her friends and extended family. Her close friend Jo Luxton and cousins Kylie and Chelsea Reynolds said they have been working hard to raise funds through quirky backyard duck bingo, paint and sips in Northampton, burger nights in Horrocks, a fish fry in Shark Bay and through the Mullewa District Agricultural Society kitchen. In 2024, Mooniemia Magic was the second highest fundraising team with more than $80,000 raised through fundraising events and generous donations from local businesses and proudly represented the Mid West in Perth. “In our first year, we raised about $25,000 and we thought that was amazing. And then it grew and grew, and last year we did over $80,000 which was just insane,” Ms Luxton said. Kylie Reynolds said: “During the cost-of-living crisis, people have just been so generous because I think everyone has been touched by cancer in some way.” This year, Mooniemia Magic is walking in Geraldton instead of Perth, to support the New Town Toyota Walk for Women’s Cancer and build momentum for a local fundraising hub. They’ve already raised an incredible $85,845 to be second on the fundraising ladder and are spreading the 35km journey across seven days, finishing the final 5km together on Saturday, May 3. Their goal is to inspire enough community support to bring an official march to Geraldton next year. “I think for us, the walking, it can be a bit therapeutic for everyone to just share their stories. It doesn’t have to be about cancer,” Chelsea Reynolds said. “It’s a nice thing, a beautiful legacy Roslyn left us because we have connected with people we didn’t really know before, and just there’s a whole little community of people that get together just because of her.” The team will start their walk at the Geraldton Yacht Club at 7am and encourage anyone who’d like to come along, or who would like to donate to check out their Walk for Women’s Cancer fundraising page.
