Moonyoonooka to farewell pony club legend Graham Scott

He started as a “pony club dad” — and ended as a pony club legend. Graham Scott will on Sunday be feted, and farewelled, at Moonyoonooka, which he has helped turn into one of the best pony club arenas in the State. He went there at the end of the 1980s, when his children Rebecca and Liam showed an interest in ponies. They pulled up reins the following decade, but not so Dad, who went on to become one of WA’s most respected officials. Mr Scott, 78, of Utakarra, proudly shows a collage he recently received. There is a photograph of himself with the words “A Salute to Graham Scott”. Around it on the large card are written wishes from pony club competitors and officials around WA. When he retired as manager of Repco Auto Parts in 2007, Mr Scott’s car had 20,000km on the clock. It’s now tallied 10 times that amount. “Had a car pre-that which had done plenty of work — reckon I’ve done 300,000km in the two cars with pony club appointments,” he said. He’s been a president of this and a delegate of that, but is probably best regarded as a course designer and eventing technical delegate. The role involves inspecting every jump on the course, which can be as many as 45 obstacles. “We started redesigning and rebuilding the layout here in 2013,” Mr Scott said, his eyes surveying the expansive Moonyoonooka complex. “The work is never finished.” And his passion for the ponies and the people suggests he mightn’t be either.
