Motorists escape injury in Hosken Street crash

Motorists escaped without injury in a crash yesterday at the notorious intersection of Hosken Street and North West Coastal Highway.

Police said the crash happened about 11.40am, when the driver of a Nissan Navara turned right onto North West Coastal Highway and collided with a Holden Apollo Sedan near the front driver’s side wheel.

The driver of the Nissan Navara, an 18-year-old man, received a $300 infringement for failing to give way.

In October, State Transport Minister Rita Saffioti announced Main Roads would replace the existing T-junction at the intersection with a “four-legged” roundabout.

The announcement came in response to safety concerns among the community, following a string of crashes.

The roundabout would also aim to ease peak hour congestion at the busy intersection.

Ms Saffioti said the roundabout would feature separate left-turn lanes on Horan Street, Hosken Street and North West Coastal Highway northbound and a shared-path network for pedestrians and cycles.

“It will be designed to accommodate a future dual carriageway on North West Coastal Highway to provide for heavy and oversized vehicles,” she said.

“Adding in the fourth leg to Horan Street will also help facilitate an urban renewal program in Spalding, planned by the Department of Communities.”

According to Main Roads, construction is set to begin early next year and is expected to be completed by mid-year.
