Motorists venturing on to rural roads urged by Greater Geraldton council to check online for latest conditions

The skies have finally opened on winter’s eve, prompting a warning from the local council for motorists on rural roads to check the latest conditions online before embarking on their journey.
City of Greater Geraldton mayor Jerry Clune urged people to make use of the city’s road conditions report webpage, which was updated regularly and included alerts on current closures, restrictions and any relevant detours on the road network.
“Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway, heading into town for supplies, or making the daily commute, checking the road conditions first can save you time, frustration and even avoid danger,” he said.
“Too often, we see visitors and locals alike caught off guard by road closures or flooded river crossings due to heavy rainfalls or construction works.
“Driving on unsealed roads after heavy rainfall can be unsafe and causes damage to the road that is expensive to repair.”
Mr Clune said all it would take to avoid disappointment was a few minutes, with weather events and maintenance works affecting road accessibility, sometimes at short notice.
“We want everyone to enjoy all that our region has to offer — safely and with minimal disruption,” he said.
“The road conditions report webpage is a vital tool in helping achieve that.”
