NAIDOC Week finishes on a high with Geraldton Regional Aboriginal Medical Service youth ball

Geraldton Regional Aboriginal Medical Service has seen NAIDOC Week out with a bang, wrapping up festivities with its youth ball on Friday night. The event had 70 Geraldton youngsters hit the dancefloor at the Geraldton Yacht Club in celebration of NAIDOC Week and the 2023 them, For our elders Six elders were in attendance, to introduce themselves to the teenagers and share stories, including Barbara and Kevin Merritt, Ralph and Barbara Dalgety and Rachel Mallard. GRAMS CEO Deborah Woods said the event was a success, and the first of its kind during NAIDOC Week. “We usually focus on the ball at the end of the year, but we’re definitely interested in another youth ball for NAIDOC Week next year,” she said. Ms Woods said GRAMS would give creative control to the youth, as a leadership opportunity and ensure it was properly marketed to the right audience. “It’s not just for Aboriginal kids, it’s for everyone and we want them to know that,” she said. “We’re hoping for it to be like a reconciliation among the younger generations.”
