New councillor Jenna Denton determined to utilise her strong network in State politics for local government

Newly-minted councillor and Labor staffer Jenna Denton says she has no intention of bringing politics into local government. Her day job as a research officer for Agricultural Region MLC Sandra Carr has gifted Ms Denton a strong network of connections to State politics and a wealth of knowledge of the Labor Party and its values. But Cr Denton said she would not blur any lines between the two levels of government. “I know politics (in local government) is pretty heavy in other States, but I think WA local government is pretty community-orientated,” she said. It is clear her interests lie in community, having done youth work, working in healthcare and engaging in advocacy roles where she can. Cr Denton said her ties to the State Government would benefit the council in helping to strengthen the relationship between the two, easing the communication between the tiers due to the established network. “Relationships with State and Federal government are important, for growth and progression. But for people that know me, they know I’m always community-focused, and I do everything with integrity, and I’ll continue to remain that way,” she said. Any concerns that a political party is entering local government is calmed by Ms Denton, who reveals she will be jumping ship in late November. “I’m stepping out of my job, and I’m looking forward to a new challenge working with surrounding shires in regional development and resilience,” she said. Cr Denton said she was not leaving her job because of her new role as councillor, but because the opportunity coincidentally arose at the same time. “It was too good to pass up, it’s regional development. And, you know, supporting our rural communities is definitely a passion area of mine. And particularly with my background in mental wellbeing and grassroots initiatives.” Cr Denton’s first week as councillor has been a positive one, receiving many congratulations and well wishes from the community. “The City has been really supportive of us, and have been helping us learn everything, just understanding the policies and processes,” she said. Cr Denton — who won 2291 or more than 25 per cent of votes, the most of any council candidate — said the initial snippet of councillor life had indicated an exciting challenge ahead, with plenty of community support behind her.
