New road name pays homage to railroad history of the Mid West

A road in Moonyoonooka which has been nameless since 1894 has been given a name which pays homage to the railroad which once supplied the community. Siding Road will be the name for a piece of road extending from Abattoir Road after the proposal was approved by the City of Greater Geraldton council on January 31. The name refers to a siding — a place where trains would collect and drop off goods for the community — which existed where the road now is before the railway was removed. Deputy mayor Jerry Clune said the issue was a “pet project” and older people in the Moonyoonooka community still remembered the siding. The lack of name had become a challenge for the council, such as when applying for road improvement grants. The name will be forwarded to the Minister for Lands for approval.
