Great Northern Highway will be blocked off until around 8pm tonight, resulting from a road train rollover and a chemical spill at Meekatharra this morning.

The truck was driving along Great Northern Highway, about 150km north of Meekatharra at 9.30am, when its third trailer, carrying bulk supplies of ammonium nitrate rolled over.

The ammonium nitrate spilled onto the road causing the major highway to be blocked.

The truck driver was able to escape uninjured.

Police from Newman and Meekatharra attended the scene, with assistance from DFES and the Department of Petroleum and Mines.

Roads are currently blocked off while the crystal-like substance is cleaned up, with a temporary road established around the crash site to allow for traffic flow.

Updates on the road closure can be found on mainroads.wa.gov.au and inquiries will continue to determine the cause of the crash.
