No titles for women’s bowls country week but strong individual performances
The AFGRI women’s country week bowls concluded last weekend as Geraldton players fell just short of making it into the final rounds.
More than 100 players from around the state took to the greens across Perth from March 22, with Geraldton’s Kerry Mcllwaine and Kerry Koltasz, Denison’s Janice Debeaux and Anne Carlshausen and Wonthella’s Julie Sims, Margaret Kupsch and Diane Knight managing to survive until the knockout rounds.
Debeaux went down to Harvey’s Anita Hughes, who then took out Mcllwaine as Koltasz survived until the last 16 before she lost a nail-biter to Kulin’s Bhel Hallam 17-16.
Carlshausen also made it to the last 16 but was outclassed by Dumbleyung’s Audrey Bateup.
Sims, Kupsch and Knight all failed to progress past their first knockout match.
Elsewhere Dandaragan’s Margaret Johson fell in the round of 32 to Kojunup’s Paula Reid while Carnarvon’s Angela Bracknell took down Carnamah’s Jessica Enright before falling to Halls Head’s Jill Gumbleton.
Denison, led by Michelle Leeson, was one of only two fours team to make it to the knockouts but fell at the first hurdle to a Composite side 23-7.
Jurien Bay also fell to a Composite side 15-2
Mingenew pairing Michelle Bagley and Jill Holmes was one of the only local pairings to survive to the knockouts but lost to Busselton’s Jane Beswick and Gail Botting.
Cervantes’ Sylvia Glatz and Christine Rennie made it to the quarter-finals but were outclassed 19-8.
Northampton’s Kaye Burton and Pauline Forrester had the strongest tournament, reaching the semi-finals, but they lost to the eventual champions, Kojunup’s Beverley Broom and Shelley Bileny.
Jurien Bay’s Heather Clatworthy and Fiona Allen fell to their first knockout while Carnamah’s Sandra Brown and Christine Lucas were not much for Busselton 17-3.
