The 2024 Geraldton Guardian Mid West Sport Awards are fast approaching and the community is being urged to nominate worthy finalists before the window closes in just more than a week.

The awards recognise anyone involved in sport — on and off the various playing surfaces.

Deputy chair Adam Murszewski said the awards were for anyone involved in any capacity at sporting clubs.

“We recognise high performing athletes, teams, coaches, officials, administrators and clubs,” he said.

Each award has slightly different eligibility and assessment criteria which can be found on the Mid West Sport Federation’s website.

A dozen categories are up for grabs this year: senior and junior sports star, team, coach, official, administrator, club and personality of the year, ATLAS inclusion award, MWAS athlete of the year, local achiever’s award and hall of fame.

While the focus is on sport and sporting achievements, a great deal of the spotlight is also placed on the administrators and volunteers who work day and night to make these competitions possible.

“There is a strong focus on the voluntary contributions people make to drive sport and recreation across the 16 local governments in the Mid West region,” Mr Murszewski said.

Nominations close on November 3 and the MWSF is encouraging the public to get their nominations submitted on their website.

Mr Murszewski said the night was a great way to celebrate sporting achievements and promote the healthy state that Mid West sport was in at the moment.

“We think the Geraldton Guardian Mid West Sports Awards are very important and a great way to celebrate the past year in Mid West sport,” he said.

“The awards are the one time of the year where all sportspeople get together to celebrate the achievements of their peers.

“It’s really important that people get behind the awards and nominate those that have achieved success as athletes or made things tick behind the scenes.”

Last year’s winners included basketballer Johny Narkle (seniors sports star) and young taekwondo gun Khyan Townsend (juniors sports star).

The big night will be held on Saturday, November 30.
