It was with an air of anticipation Freeman Phil Cooper and Mayor Shane Van Styn approached a shiny stainless steel canister last opened on November 15, 1994. On that occasion Mr Cooper was Mayor of the then City of Geraldton, and the then WA Governor Michael Jeffery ceremonially buried the time capsule in the Marine Terrace “partial mall”. Fears about the lid being stuck were quickly allayed on Tuesday afternoon as it screwed easily off and Mr Cooper began to remove photographs, documents and a copy of the day’s Geraldton Guardian. “Mixed feelings on eve of cray season,” was the front page lead story, reminding Geraldton that its much loved industry is always in the news. Also in the capsule was a copy of Mr Cooper’s address to the Governor, which he read again after a little prompting from Mayor Van Styn.
