It seems like a long time ago now, but back in February, I was delighted by just how beautiful the moon looked — particularly the full moon. But apart from looking at it for a few nights, I didn’t really pay a great deal of attention. I simply regarded the sight as one of the great benefits of living in regional WA. And then to follow up, the moon in March was just as magnificent. Whether it was a cloudy night or not, the moon shone down superbly and made me feel blessed to live by the shores of Champion Bay. So I was somewhat surprised when just recently, I heard that April’s full moon would be a pink moon. It would be a great distraction from the current set of COVID-19 circumstances that we find ourselves in. But when I gazed at Earth’s companion on the designated night, I could find no pink. But I could find no fault either. It was another brilliant display in the heavens. However, it started me thinking as to what a pink moon might be. Was it one that caught the last rays of the sun as it disappeared in the west? That could hardly be the case because the full moon was not in the sky until at least an hour, two maybe, since the sun had set. Is it possible that the pink moon is a Northern Hemisphere phenomenon? Named as such because it coincides with spring on the other side of the equator and the blossoming of flowers, many of them pink. Simple, eh? So with a little time on my hands, I have also discovered that the so-called Pink Moon was the third this year in a sequence of supermoon that started in February. Apparently, there are four in a row, and the next one’s due in May. They are called supermoons because the moon’s orbit takes it closer to Earth than at other times. The February moon is called the Snow Moon, March the Worm Moon, April the Pink Moon and the May moon will be a Strawberry Moon. All very interesting, though I think the media would have had a tougher job promoting the Worm Moon ... Incidentally, our recent pink moon has also gone by other names including Egg Moon and Fish Moon. The last supermoon this year, the Strawberry, will be on May 7.
