People infected in Geraldton art exhibition COVID outbreak start to see the light at the end of the tunnel

Since a COVID outbreak put at least 15 people into isolation after a Geraldton CBD art exhibition, the artist in question says she is overwhelmed with the support from those exposed. Many people are only beginning to feel better after exposure to the virus on Friday, April 1, almost a fortnight later, and thankful to be fully vaccinated. Artist Savannah Wilkinson (Sammy Jay) was one of the first to develop symptoms from the night and said the group was getting there and most were coming to the end of the virus and beginning to see the other side. “We haven’t had any severe cases, we are chugging along,” she said. Ms Wilkinson said everyone involved in the art exhibition tested quickly after being notified of the bad news and went straight into isolation. “I’m impressed with the reaction from everyone who was there,” she said. “Everyone has been really supportive, I was concerned I’d receive backlash from people who came to the exhibition but everyone has been kind and responsible by going straight into isolation when we notified them.” The exhibition had checked vaccination certificates to ensure the guests were fully vaccinated. A visitor who contracted the virus, Roxanne Grant, said she wouldn’t like to have contracted the virus without being triple vaccinated as she could barely cope with the symptoms and the community should take the virus seriously. “I think Geraldton has handled this outbreak well. COVID is not just the flu, it is its own animal and I didn’t like it one bit,” she said. “I don’t know what it would have been like without being triple vaccinated but if the vax helped I’m glad I didn’t get to experience it.” On Wednesday, there were 799 active cases reported in the Mid West, of which 126 developed overnight. Across WA, 7426 new cases were reported on Wednesday.
