Police identify suspect in alleged Wintersun Hotel burglary, resulting in damaged smokes machine, stolen booze

Police have identified a suspect they allege attempted to break open a cigarette machine inside the Wintersun Hotel and then stole two bottles of whiskey in an early morning burglary. About 2.40am on Thursday, February 2, acting officer-in-charge Sen. Sgt Nathan Johansen said a 42-year-old man allegedly used a mallet to break free a glass panel and damage the latch to a door, gaining access to the hotel. He alleged the suspect attempted to break into a cigarette machine, causing substantial damage to the door, but was unsuccessful. “He moved over to the TAB bar area, climbed over the bar and (allegedly) stole two bottles of Jack Daniel’s whiskey from the shelf valued at $60 each and exited the hotel,” Sen. Sgt Johansen said. He said CCTV footage showed the suspect travelling towards Chapman Road and police were actively searching for the 42-year-old known to police.
