Police investigate fire at iconic Geraldton Moreton Bay fig
Police are investigating the cause of a fire next to Geraldton Visitor Centre early this morning.
A Department of Fire and Emergency Services spokeswoman said a triple zero caller saw a scrub fire around the iconic Moreton Bay Fig on Marine Terrace at 5.52am.
The tree is not understood to be damaged but the fire caused an estimated $5000 worth of damage to the decking.
Part of the decking has been removed.
DFES said the cause is suspicious.
Anyone who has any information call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
The tree is next to another iconic Geraldton centrepiece – a bolted 50 cent swing that pays homage to the Randolph Stow book The Merry-Go-Round In The Sea.
