Geraldton police are investigating the cause of a nasty crash this morning after a car collided with a tree on Chapman Road.

Police say the incident occurred just after 7.30am this morning when the car, a blue Holden sedan travelling north, left the road before violently hitting the tree.

The single male occupant received minor injuries in the crash and was taken to Geraldton Hospital for observation, according to a spokeswoman for St John Ambulance.

Traffic heading southbound was delayed for over an hour as the vehicle was removed from road.

Witnesses to the crash described seeing the vehicle lose control and hit the curb before ploughing into the tree.

“There was a huge smashing sound,” one man told the Geraldton Guardian. “The car spun around and ended up blocking the lane heading the other way.”

Police say their investigation into the cause of the crash will continue.
