A fight erupted outside a Geraldton pub involving up to 100 drunk people, forcing police to step in with some unruly patrons turning on officers, including one who allegedly kicked a cop in the groin. Police are investigating the brawl outside the Wintersun Hotel at the weekend, which they described as untidy and disappointing. Police were called to help when a mob fight broke out between 50 to 100 intoxicated people on Saturday. About 250 people had attended a ticketed event that night, watching a band perform. Geraldton Police officer-in-charge Sen. Sgt Chris Martin said as the event was closing about 11.50pm, there were reports of a big fight out the front with people throwing glass bottles in the area. He said police had concerns for a woman lying on the ground, believing she may have been assaulted by the mob, but it turned out people were trying to help her stand up. “Police attended and found one woman on the ground surrounded by other people,” he said. “The woman was highly intoxicated and couldn’t stand up. The police weren’t passed on the message therefore they were concerned she was being assaulted.” Sen. Sgt Martin said police broke up the crowd and attended to the woman on the ground when people started to assault police. “The crowd became hostile, pushing and pulling police officers at the scene. An officer in particular was kicked in the testicles by a suspect who was arrested at the scene,” he said. Sen. Sgt Martin said back-up arrived at the scene and a total of 10 officers were in attendance before the disturbance was quelled. A 30-year-old woman from Geraldton was arrested and charged with disorderly behaviour and a 23-year-old woman from Geraldton was arrested and charged with assault public officer, obstruct police officers and serious assault against an officer. Both women were released on bail and are due to face court at a later date. A 29-year-old Geraldton man was arrested and charged with obstructing police and serious assault against a police officer. He was summonsed to court at a later date.
