Police say 81-year-old woman struck by and trapped under reversing 4WD on Geraldton’s Marine Terrace

A woman in her 80s who was rushed to hospital with serious injuries after police say she was trapped under a reversing car in Geraldton’s Marine Terrace mall on Monday afternoon is in a stable condition. On Tuesday morning, staff at Geraldton Health Campus were still assessing whether the 81-year-old woman required hospital treatment in Perth. The WA Country Health Service said on Tuesday the patient was in a stable condition. Acting officer-in-charge Sgt Adrian Geary said he could not confirm the severity of the woman’s injuries. “Older people tend to have a shock and go downhill afterwards, so I couldn’t say whether the injuries were life-threatening,” he said. Traffic OIC Sgt George Tilbury told the Guardian at the time of print the woman was still being assessed and may need to be flown to Perth. Although in a stable condition, he said the woman would need surgery. According to police, the 81-year-old pedestrian was struck by a four-wheel-drive being driven by an 84-year-old man driving outside Bankwest in wet and windy conditions about 2.30pm on Monday. The driver was allegedly reversing at the time and left the woman trapped under the vehicle. Sgt Tilbury said police were made aware when the driver reported that the woman was stuck under the vehicle. “She has sustained serious injuries but she is in hospital currently being treated and assessed,” he said. “When police arrived at the scene the woman was still trapped and had to be freed by DFES.” Sgt Tilbury said six police officers attended the scene, as well as paramedics and a DFES crew. A DFES spokesperson confirmed they received a call from St John WA at 2.33pm and the woman was removed from the vehicle by 2.52pm. A St John WA spokeswoman said the woman was taken to Geraldton Health Campus under priority one conditions with serious multiple injuries. Sgt Tilbury said the driver of the vehicle was very distressed and felt remorseful about the incident. “The investigation is ongoing, it’s only early stages at the moment,” he said.
