Pop-up museum hits Geraldton Foreshore as city prepares for school holiday activities
A pop-up museum has found a home on the Geraldton Foreshore as one of many events happening these school holidays.
Geraldton Museum has unveiled its Museum in a Container, which includes displays about camels.
Visitors will be able to learn about Australia’s camels, their role in developing country towns and how they were considered invasive animals.
A life-sized board game called Working Camels will also be open to visitors.
Similar to Snakes and Ladders, the game involves rolling a die to build the Goldfields pipeline by delivering supplies while avoiding mineshafts.
There will be other camel-related activities at the Museum of Geraldton, including an opportunity to meet giant camel puppet Naqa.
Naqa refers to the Arabic word for female camel and can be seen as part of the Camels and Cameleers activity.
Other activities include creating a 3D camel, bracelets and identifying objects through a mirage effect.
The activities begin on Saturday, September 21. For details, visit visit.museum.wa.gov.au/geraldton/whats-on.
The City of Greater Geraldton has also announced events for the school holidays.
Popular events have returned, including soccer clinics, wheelchair basketball and clay sculpting, but there are some additions, such as a pom-pom workshop and collage making.
City of Greater Geraldton mayor Jerry Clune said the school holiday events catered to local youth.
“We’ve worked hard to create a program that reflects the diverse interests of our youth and provides them with memorable experiences,” he said.
“This school holiday program is jam packed with a mix of new offerings as well as the return of some old favourites.”
Most of the events are free of charge, but many of them require registration online.
More information on the school holiday program can be found on the city’s website.
