A smoke alert has been issued for southern Walkway, in the City of Greater Geraldton, this afternoon.

According to the Department of Fire and Emergency Services, smoke from prescribed burns has been blown by prevailing winds to Walkway and surrounding areas.

It is expected to clear later today.

A Main Roads spokeswoman said no roads had been closed in the area, but DFES has advised motorists to avoid the area if possible or reduce speed and drive carefully.

If you have a respiratory condition and you have been affected by smoke you should contact your local doctor or call Health Direct on 1800 022 222.
