Rams duo Dion Harrison and Paul Valenti selected to represent Western Australia as nationals get under way

Two veterans of the Geraldton softball community are representing the State as they travelled to Sydney to take part in the Softball Nationals over-35 tournament. Rams duo Dion Harrison and Paul Valenti got their campaign started on Wednesday, July 5 when WA took on the ACT with WA smashing their opponents 15-0 before breezing passed an invitational side 12-0. This year marks the first time that a team from WA has ventured interstate to participate in the over-35s Softball Nationals. For Harrison, this opportunity carries additional significance as it marks his return to competitive softball following a knee reconstruction. “I didn’t think I’d be able to get back into the game after my knee surgery, but here I am,” he said. “It’s a surreal feeling to be representing WA at the nationals. I’ve been hitting well lately, and I’m excited to contribute to our team’s success.” While preparing for the over-35s nationals, Harrison has also been actively involved in helping WA resurrect its open men’s softball team, which had been inactive due to the pandemic. “The absence of the open men’s team during the pandemic was a blow to our softball community,” Harrison explained. “But we’re working hard to bring it back, and I’m proud to be a part of that effort we have a solid group of players, some of whom will join me at the nationals. We’re eager to make an impact.” Harrison acknowledged the support of local politicians in helping them get the team across to Sydney “I want to extend my heartfelt appreciation to Sandra Carr, Lara Dalton, and Darren West for their support, their efforts their belief in our abilities and their dedication to sports in our community is truly inspiring,” Harrison said. Ms Carr was only too happy to help the players out. “It is great to see regional people recognised for their talent and passion for their sport and provided opportunities to participate at a high level,” she said. “We are seeing a lot of people of all ages leaving the regions to compete in state and national events, which will enhance their performance and professionalism as a sportsperson and contribute greatly to their home teams. “I am looking forward to seeing Dion come home with a new experience, recognition, and hopefully a win.”
