Rotary to auction off gear

From bales of hay to the latest Telstra mobile phones, the Rotary Club of Geraldton’s Radio Auction has come a long way since the fundraiser first hit the airwaves in 1991.

The club, which has $46,000 of donated items to auction off this Sunday, has raised more than $830,000 for local charities in its 26-year history.

Club president Kaylla Broad said she was excited for the group to hit the million-dollar milestone in the next few years.

“I think when that happens, we’ll have to have a big celebration and invite the whole community to thank them for all their support,” Miss Broad said.

The Rotary Club of Geraldton’s annual auction ran live in the old Geraldton woolshed in the 1980s before organisers agreed the reach would be wider if they moved the bidding to the radio.

From the about $8000 raised during the inaugural radio event to the more than $30,000 raised during last year’s auction, givers in Geraldton have come out strongly to quadruple the average dollars raised yearly for charity.

Miss Broad said the Radio Auction was the club’s biggest event and the longest to organise, but it was a great project to be part of.

She said a variety of great items would go under the hammer.

“The fundraiser used to mainly involve farmers, so you would get people donating bales of hay and wool,” she said.

“Now we have things like mobile phones, a kilo of prawns, Qantas Frequent Flyer points and a rugby ball.”

Miss Broad said she thought this year’s hot item would be accommodation in Broome.

“We have a Broome package which covers four nights’ accommodation at Oaks Cable Beach Sanctuary Resort, a four-day car hire, a meal voucher at Matso’s Broome Brewery, a Zanders at Cable Beach meal voucher and a tour for two of Willie Creek Pearl Farm,” she said.

“I think that will be snapped up quick. If you can get a holiday for $1000 and it’s worth about $1800, that’s great.”

Miss Broad said she would like to thank club members, sponsors and all the businesses that donated items for auction.

“All of this shows that businesses and people in Geraldton really care,” she said.

Rotarians, volunteers and Geraldton Grammar School students will answer the phones at the Geraldton Telstra Exchange on Sunday. To bid, phone 9965 4888.

Bidders can tune into the Rotary Club of Geraldton Radio Auction on Spirit 98.1FM between 9am and 3.30pm.

• Due to space, item descriptions are sometimes brief and may need clarification.

• The item you buy is what you get - exchange may not be an option.

• The highest $ value bid at the completion of each segment is awarded the goods.

• You will be notified during the next hour if you have been successful.

• You are required to call into the Bendigo Bank in Forrest Street where you will receive a receipt of authenticity on making full payment for your goods.

• Then present the receipt or voucher to collect your goods from the participating business.

• Some items (eg. Vouchers) have already been submitted and will be available at the Bendigo Bank for collection.

• Use constructive bids to ensure yours is the highest. Last minute dashes can result in disappointment as all prior bids may not necessarily be current, plus all lines may be busy and no bid can be accepted after the bell.

• Ensure to honour your payment by 4th November 2017 at Bendigo Bank. EFTPOS facilities will be available at the Bank.

• Rotary Club of Geraldton reserves the right to resell or reuse any items that remain unclaimed by Saturday 4th November at 12pm at their discretion.
