Seasoned UWA water polo star visits Geraldton’s representatives ahead of Australian Youth Championships

Geraldton’s next generation of water polo talent is preparing to test itself on the national stage, with a strong contingent of local athletes set to compete at the upcoming Water Polo Australia Youth Championships in Brisbane. The Geraldton Water Polo Association will send a girls under-16s team to compete in the green division, a development grade designed to expose emerging players to high-level competition. The two-week tournament runs from April 8 to 18. The local squad has a promising mix of experienced campaigners and newcomers to the sport, creating a balanced group expected to benefit from the opportunity. Association representative Peter Manuel said it was valuable stepping stone for the athletes. “The girls will gain an amazing level of competition and experience,” he said. “It sets them up to continue in the sport and gives them a strong foundation to build upon for future years.” Several other Geraldton-born athletes will also play with UWA sides across age groups ranging from under 12s to under 18s, for both boys and girls. Tessa O’Malley will also feature, representing Melville’s under 18s team. Adding further inspiration to the group in recent weeks was a visit from UWA Torpedoes player Jamie Cannon, who spent time in Geraldton training with the local juniors. She has previously represented Western Australia and competed at a high level with UWA, most recently claiming a Canberra Cup title. She was full of praise for the Geraldton group, particularly the under 16 girls heading to Brisbane. “I was extremely impressed. Their commitment, work ethic and shared determination to achieve their goals were evident,” she said. “Equally impressive was the strong sense of camaraderie within the group. Friendship is a fundamental aspect of water polo, and seeing the girls support and encourage one another is a key reason I believe they will be successful.” Cannon also noted the local talent matched what she sees in Perth. “The attitude and dedication of the Geraldton juniors closely mirror those of young athletes in Perth,” she said. “I was particularly impressed by the speed and agility of the players.” Currently working in regional WA, Cannon said the visit had been a rewarding experience. “I am very pleased to have made the trip to Geraldton as it is a beautiful part of Western Australia and it has been a wonderful experience so far,” she said.
