Shaken Geraldton car smash victim not contacted by police

A Geraldton woman whose car was smashed by a 32-year-old man at Coles Express Wonthella on Monday night said Police had not contacted her to give a statement, despite taking her number at the time of the incident. According to a representative from WA police, the man in question was not in police custody, having been charged with theft. The woman, who wants to remain anonymous, was with her two children at the petrol station when the man yelled at her and smashed the side of her car with an iron bar. Her kids were inside the car at the time. “The police told me they would contact me for a statement but they haven’t done so yet,” she told the Geraldton Guardian this morning. She said the family was “shaken” by the harrowing incident. “Once the kids are all in bed, my mind starts going again,” she said. A male witness said he heard the large man say, “you see that lady? I am going to f...... kill her”, about the woman. The witness, who also didn’t want to be named, said he saw the man walked up to the woman and smashed the right side of her vehicle with his iron bar. He said he stepped in and tried to de-escalate the situation despite being very afraid. “I was s...... myself,” he said. He said the violent man also stole a bucket full of choc milk from the service station fridge and howled like a dog at the woman working behind the register. Police eventually arrived and took the man into custody. However, he was later released and is awaiting summons. A WA Police spokesperson confirmed some parts of the witness’ account, including the theft and the perpetrators “erratic” behaviour. However, several other details, including the threats, were not present in official police reports. On Tuesday afternoon an officer at the station said the case would be subject to further investigation. The Geraldton Guardian made several unsuccessful attempts to contact police this morning for an update.
